Every three weeks, I present the students with a variety of non-fiction articles related to current events. Students select the article that they wish to read and write a summary of the text. They are encouraged to show their understanding of the text in a variety of ways so long as they are meeting the success criteria of summary writing we had established at the beginning of the year. I have truly enjoyed seeing the students use their strengths to show their understanding. I have read summaries in the typical format, slides presentations, sculptures with explanations, posters, web sites, newspaper article format, comic book, mini books, Powtoons, etc. Although the purpose of this task is focused on reading and they are only evaluated for their summary (not the visual component), I hope that students are also learning about the use of different tools and formats through their work.
Ask your child about the topics they chose to read about and how they showed their understanding.
